Our Background

Founded in 2003 by Ashley and Nita Martin, Just Karate provides a fun, inclusive environment. Our instructors share a prestigious lineage, having trained under the legendary Sensei Enoeda of the JKA.

The Shotokan Style

We teach traditional Shotokan, focusing on deep stances and explosive power. Our curriculum covers Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring).

Sensei Ashley Martin

Chief Instructor & Examiner

Former Cambridge Sports Coach of the Year and author of The Shotokan Karate Bible. Graded to black belt under Sensei Enoeda.

Sensei Carl Homer

Instructor

A black belt since 1999 who has trained at the JKA Tokyo HQ. Specializes in the technical application of kata and traditional research.

Sensei Jack Powell

Instructor

Graded to black belt in 2024 by Sensei Ashley Martin. Brings previous experience as an assistant Sensei with Tora Judo Kwai.

The Journey: Karate Grades

10th Kyu (White): Basic blocks, stepping punch, and front kick.
9th Kyu (Orange): Knife hand block and Heian Shodan kata.
8th Kyu (Red): Blocks with reverse punch and Heian Nidan kata.
7th Kyu (Yellow): Backfist and spear-hand; Heian Sandan kata.
6th Kyu (Green): Roundhouse kicks and Heian Yondan kata.
5th & 4th Kyu (Purple): Back kicks and advanced Heian katas.
3rd to 1st Kyu (Brown): Free-style fighting and Bassai Dai kata.
Dan Grades (Black): Perfection of kata and self-defence.
